Hurtigruten

2 August 2017 ~ Ned's 75th Birthday!

We boarded the MS Midnatsol for 10:30AM departure from Trondheim. The MS Midnatsol was built in 2002 and rebuilt in 2016. There are nine decks. At full capacity, it can accommodate 500 passengers.

Hurtigruten (the Coastal Express) first sailed the Norwegian coast in 1893. It transported mail and cargo from Bergen to Kirkenes (end of the road on the northernmost point between Norway and USSR). The voyage took a mere seven days, hence the name Hurtigruten.
·      43.6% of manager level employees are women
·      Since 2009, Hurtigruten has reduced annual emissions of CO2 by 18,000 tonnes.
·      In 2015, Hurtigruten participated in Paris Climate Conference and made two presentations on how to create a sustainable shipping industry.

·      Since 1935, Hurtigruten has been measuring sea temperatures along the Norwegian coast, in cooperation with the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research. The data represents one of the longest climatic time series in the world. The data are used to monitor and assess environmental conditions along the Norwegian coast.
