As noted in the previous post, we spent yesterday (Monday 14 August) on a road trip, with Harald at the wheel. After the FrauKirch, we next stopped in Beilstein - on the Mosel River. It is no longer a sleepy little village. Viking River Cruises has a dock here, although blessedly the ship was not in the vicinity - there were plenty of tourists nonetheless.
Emmy Lou loved Beilstein!
Here the vineyards grow on steep south facing hillsides (some with crumbling castle ruins crowning the hilltop). The vines must be tended by hand, as no machinery can navigate the steep terrain.
This is Riesling region, and German Riesling is dry (trocken). There is a special type here called Steillage Mosel Riesling, the grapes are from the steepest hillside vineyards in the Mosel River Valley and in the world.
Note: There are lots of bike paths along the Mosel River. This would be a great place to ride (read: flat) and scenic.
