Bergen:The Penguin and Bathroom Signage

Friday 4 August ~ Bergen

Tonight is our second (and final) night in Bergen. There is much we did not do or see, but that is OK.

Fløibanen Funicular Railway climbs 1000’ in 7 minutes to the top of Mount Fløyen. It opened in 1918, and features magnificent views of Bergen and the fjords. Lots of kiddie activities.

Leprosy Museum dates back to 1700. Until the 19th century, 3% of the Norwegian population had leprosy. The last patient died in 1947.

Håkon’s Hall
King Håkon VII (1872-1957), grandfather of current king, was a Danish prince who married Queen Victoria’s granddaughter. He was the first king of modern Norway, crowned after Norway got independence from Sweden in 1905.

Public Toilets are illuminated with blue lights to discourage heroin addicts from using the public facilities to shoot up. The blue lights make veins difficult to see.

The Penguin

Bergen is a tourist mob scene. Therefore, we went off the tourist trail to a darling local pub:
Pingvinen (The Penguin).

Local Micro-Brewed Beers on tap

We loved watching the people! That alone was worth the price of the dinner (and the taxes!)

The bathrooms signage was also delightful!

  1. Love the penguin bathroom signs; very clever. And the Fisketorget looks wonderful. Hope you had lots of samples. I'd have loved the explanation of Grieg (sp?)'s music. Here the music is Spanish as it's Fiesta and we're being old poops avoiding the whole thing. The town is beyond capacity! Enjoy the next phase of your adventures. We're toasting the end of Fiesta with a margarita tonight! Hugs.
