Norway Nuts: Follow the Crowd...

Saturday, August 6 ~ Norway in a Nutshell (aka Norway Nuts!)

Well, it sounded like a good idea... When we went to the train station to pick up our tickets for  "Norway in a Nutshell" we were told, "Just follow the crowd." That should have been a clue!

The route
The itinerary
  • Bergen -> Voss via Bergen Railway @ 8:43-9:56
  • Voss -> Gundvangen via bus @ 10:10-11:20
  • Gundvangen -> Flåm via ferryboat  @ 12:30-14:55
  • Flåm -> Myrdal via Flåm Railway @ 16:04 17:30
  • Myrdal -> Oslo via Norwegian Railways
Spectacular train ride from Bergen to Voss
8:43-9:56AM

From Voss, we were transported by buses down the steep hairpin bends of Stalheimskleiva to Gundvangen. Stunning!

Gundvangen
 We again followed the crowd to the ferry for a cruise on the UNESCO-protected Nærøyfjord and the Aurlandsfjord. This was a "tourist nightmare"...
It was like a blood sport to find seating, especially when it rained, and people moved indoors... /:

The historic Flåm Railway

Myrdal @ 866 meters above sea level (approximately 2700') is above the timberline with visible ice fields. Note the crowd (right).
Fortunately, most went back to Bergen while we traveled on to Oslo with some hearty backpackers.

  En route back to Oslo, via Norwegian Rail, we passed many alpine tjonne (small lakes).
